Suddenly, the automotive market is again a hypercompetitive place. Maybe it’s the reality call a lot of manufacturers got after a more than meager 2009 sales year. And the numbers have been released just on the heels of the recent Toyota recalls, factors that cost the Japanese manufacturer the top spot this year – as well as eight recommendations from Consumer Reports. But that’s not all Subaru won in the Top Picks competition. The Subaru Forester won the “Small SUV” category, a title that helps give the popular Forester even better credibility in the eyes of slow-to-trust consumers. Subaru dealers in Ft. Myers have been featuring the Forester on showroom floors for the past few years, and they knew all along that they had a winner on their hands. Part of the reason the vehicle garnered such heavy compliments is the fact that it drives more like an actual car than any other SUV on the market. According to the Consumer Reports review, “Passengers are treated to a spacious cabin, with a roomy rear seat and excellent visibility. The 2.5X provides an impressive 22 mpg overall with an automatic, 24 mpg with a manual. And the turbocharged 2.5XT delivers effortless acceleration and 20 mpg, but it takes premium fuel. The 2.5X has had excellent reliability, while the 2.5XT’s is average.” Not all of the words here are flattering, but there truly is enough here to call the Forester one of the best vehicles in its class.

Other manufacturers benefited from pretty solid performances. Hyundai, Nissan and Volkswagen all received good ratings, but unfortunately for the struggling U.S. manufacturer, they all came in before Ford. And, of course, Chrysler ended up bottoming out the list, a fact that begs the question, “Why are people still buying from Chrysler?” I mean, it isn’t like their cars are the least expensive on the market, so why wouldn’t you just upgrade and get a Kia? Who knows. Sometimes I’m put off by the trends of consumers, but I wasn’t born for market research. I was, however, born to drive, so I’ll keep on trucking.
