Women – get in the know about cars
Girls – do you know what to do if your car breaks down while you’re driving or what to do when you get a flat tyre? While many of us are happy to rely on the kindness of passing strangers – knowing a thing or two about motoring can really be a life saviour in some situations. It can also help you learn about how to care for and maintain your car – so it’ll keep working for your for the long term.
Motoring basics that every gal – and guy – should know
A car can be a complicated piece of machinery and looking under the hood of a car can be quite intimidating. You don’t want to just start pulling knobs and cables at random.
Here are some of the bits and bobs that you ought to know:
- Check the oil – check the oil levels when the car has cooled down. You’ll be looking for the “dipstick” as indicated in the owner’s manual. Clean off any oil that’s on the stick and dip it back in as far as it will go. When you pull the dipstick out again, make a note of the oil level and that it is at an acceptable level. If the oil level is low, you’ll need to add the right type of oil for your car.
- Check the transmission fluid - for automatic cars, you’ll be looking for another dipstick under the hood. When checking the transmission fluid, you’ll want to have the engine running – use the same method as for checking the oil.
- Check the coolant – this is where the antifreeze is stored – its purpose is to help cool down your vehicle as it runs. Make sure the engine is completely cool before you locate the reservoir.
On the road
Know what to do in case of an emergency when you’re on the road – here are four steps to keep in mind.
- Pay attention – keep an eye, ear and nose out for any signs of trouble with your car. If you start to hear something unusual, smell burning smoke or oil or see fumes coming out of your engine – pull over as soon as it’s safe to do so. If you notice yourself swerving and the car becomes difficult to control – pull over.
- Diagnose – once you’ve pulled over, try and diagnose the problem – look for any indicator lights lit up on the dashboard. Is the engine overheated? Do you have a flat tyre? Have you run out of petrol? Does the vehicle refuse to start?
- Repair on-site – this is where having those basic motoring skills will come in handy. Keep a tool kit in your trunk along with your spare tyre. It’s also a good idea to have a supply of essential fluids for emergencies, such as brake fluid, antifreeze and coolant on hand as well. If you can change a spare, add antifreeze or jumpstart your vehicle on your own – you’ll save money and hassle on the expensive tow.
- Call for help - if all else fails, you’ll need to get the professionals to come out. An NRMA membership offers roadside assistance to help get you on your way. If you’re not a member, you can still sign up for membership (and pay an additional fee) on the spot if you’re in a jam.
Women on Wheels
Meanwhile, if you’re looking to ramp up your car knowledge – or get a refresher course – Heartland Holden dealerships offer free workshops and tutorials. These courses, called Women on Wheels, are designed especially for women to learn the basics of motoring. Qualified, trained and patient mechanics take attendees through the steps of some of the common checks and procedures – including how to check the oil and change a tyre.
