Massa Wins 2007 Spanish Grand Prix
Felipe Massa, driving for Ferrari, won the 2007 FIA Formula One Spanish Grand prix at the Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain. Massa made a second hat-trick after this year’s Bahrain Grand Prix.
In 2007 pre-season testing, Massa has topped five times and set the fastest lap for four out of five circuits. His 2007 season started with problems. At the Australian Grand Prix at the season opening, he suffered a gearbox problem during qualifying rounds and required an engine change. The combination of a gearbox failure in qualifying coupled with a ten-grid-slot penalty for the engine change required him to start from 22nd on the grid. He drove a recovery race in Australia, utilizing a one-pitstop strategy to finish in the sixth place in the end.
Massa’s problems continued in Malaysia, where regardless of qualifying on the Pole Position, he was passed by Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton of McLarens by the first corner. An unfortunate overtaking attempt on Hamilton saw Massa run off the track and lose two more places thus plummeting to fifth place. He eventually finished fifth. Massa rebounded in the following rounds, winning the Grands Prix of Bahrain and Spain, both from pole position.
At present, FIA Formula One official championship standings is headed by Hamilton with 30 points, and that is two points ahead of Alonso and three ahead of Massa. McLaren-Mercedes now have a nine point lead over Ferrari in the Constructers standings.
Massa, the Brazilian Formula One racing driver currently employed by the Ferrari team, went on to win the race by almost seven seconds to the McLaren pair of Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, respectively second and third places. This result made Hamilton, after merely only four races in his short career, a leading champion as well as the youngest driver to be leading the championship, appropriately taking the record from Bruce McLaren, McLaren team founder.
“Things just keep getting better and I continue living my dream. In the early stages I was struggling to get heat into the tyres and had a bit of oversteer, but things improved considerably a few laps into the race – however the gap to Felipe was already too big. In the second stint I was a bit unlucky with the traffic, but that happens sometimes. Overall I’m happy with the outcome of the race, and I want to keep on scoring points. The team has worked really hard since Bahrain and whilst we didn’t win I still think we can take some satisfaction as we are leading both Championships,” Hamilton said.
“My chance for victory disappeared after the incident at the first corner. I got off the line OK at the start and was able to get a tow from Felipe and challenge into the first corner as I was already half a car length in front however we touched, and I had to go on the gravel to avoid an accident. We were both lucky to finish the race. As a result by the second corner I was fourth,” intimated Alonso. “I also sustained a bit of damage to my car which upset the balance for the rest of the race. I lost additional time in the second stint as the tyres were not working as well, but I still think the result would have stayed the same even if we had used the softer tyres,” he further concludes.
“Coming into the Monaco Grand Prix being first and second in the Drivers’ Championship and leading the Constructors’ battle is a good achievement for the entire team. Our pace was a little weak in the middle sector. Fernando’s race was hampered by having damaged his deflector during his efforts to get past Massa in the first corner. Another solid performance from Lewis. As you would expect we will continue to push hard in our development programme to put the team in the best possible position to win as many of the remaining races as possible,” said Rod Dennis of McLaren.
Pole Robert Kubica was able to make up for his fellow racers’ gearbox induced retirement by continuing the team’s run of forth place finishes. Aguri Suzuki’s Japanese Super Aguri team notched up their first ever points with an eight place by Takuma Sato. “I just cannot describe how happy we are and a point means much more than anything else for us and this is an absolutely fantastic result” Sato said.
More and more racing teams are tickling racing aficionados craving for intensified track action. And they are expecting more action in the coming season. The Nissan distributor rotor or Infiniti auto parts could even add spice to the race.
