Viral Marketing The New Word Of Mouth

Viral marketing is an idea that spreads–and an idea that while it is spreading actually helps market your business or cause.

Hotmail, for example, or YouTube. The more people use them, the more people see them. The more people see them, the more people use them. The product or service must be something that improves once more people use it.

A second kind has evolved over the last few years, and that’s a marketing campaign that spreads but isn’t the product itself.

• The blair witch project (1999) as striking examples of viral marketing, but warned of some dangers for imitation marketers.
• Launched in 2002, BMW Films was among the earliest viral marketing campaigns. It attracted nearly 55 million viewers and helped to elevate the career of Clive Owen.
• Burger King’s The Subservient chicken campaign, running from 2004 until 2007, was cited in wired magazine as a striking example of viral or word-of-mouth marketing. Cadbury’s Dairy Milk 2007. Gorilla Advertisment campaign  was heavily popularised on YouTube and Facebook.

Something being viral is not, in an of itself, viral marketing. Who cares that 32,000,000 people saw your stupid video? It didn’t market you or your business in a tangible, useful way.

Marketers are obsessed with free media, and, as is often the case, we blow it in our rush to get our share. We create content that is hampered or selfish or boring. Or we create something completely viral that doesn’t do any marketing at all.

Reaching Your Target Audience

This is why your viral agent needs to be carefully woven from your central sales message and tailored to your target audience. Without this focus, you could very well end up with a bunch of traffic that you just don’t want (and before you say “So what?” ask yourself what that extra strain on your servers is going to cost you).

Similarly, if you do reach your target audience, you need to ensure that the transition to your site and/or sales message is a smooth and effective one.

It is the maintenance of this association that is at the core of successful marketing. Gearing it in such a way that existing customers voluntarily help to convey your sales message and secure conversions on your behalf; this is Viral Marketing.
