Better, faster, stronger – we can rebuild it. We have the technology. No, this isn’t the trailer for a new series called “The Six Million Dollar Car”, but it is a new version of the Audi R8 GT. Better, lighter and just as fast. Chantilly VA used car customers won’t believe it ‘til they drive it.

The Audi R8 was already considered a supercar; with aluminum frame and magnesium chassis it was built for speed. The new version has a V-10 and keeps the Quattro all-wheel drive system. What’s amazing is that the R8 GT is actually made of lighter materials than the aluminum and magnesium of its predecessor. No small feat, that, but Audi has pulled it off. Then Audi turned to a lighter grade of sheet metal with portions of the aluminum luggage rack cut out. Carbon fiber and reinforced plastic were molded to create the rear hatch and the trademark look of the R8’s side blades and rear bumper. This eliminated another 35 pounds.

More pounds were shaved from the battery, air intake module, power brake system, exhaust system and engine compartment insulation. Sixty-nine pounds were saved by using plastic reinforced with glass in the seats and the carpet is thinner and lighter to account for another 17 pounds overboard. Chantilly VA used car buyers will be pleased with the changes and the R8 GT is not an Audi that will disappoint.

All totaled, just over 220 pounds was streamlined from the R8 V10, cutting its curb weight to 3362 pounds. Lighter apparently equals faster and that’s what drivers of sporty cars like this require – speed. Audi was very particular and specific in lightening this vehicle. Rather than change the popular exterior style or eliminate amenities, they turned to science and were able, in almost every case, to eliminate weight by using lighter weight material rather than less material. Chantilly VA used car dealers will no doubt be comparing this model to the previous R8 and trying to figure out just how Audi worked its magic on this model. It doesn’t really matter how they did it. It’s done and it’s lighter and faster and in showrooms for those who want a driving experience that’s lighter than air – 220 pounds lighter, to be exact.
